CHICKENS I have a chicken story that makes me laugh every time I think about it so I thought I would share it so maybe it will make you chuckle.
When my grandson was about 6 years old, we had a rooster that was a little onry. Kenny (my grandson) was told to go in the chicken pen to see if there were any eggs. The rooster had his bluff in on Kenny and was standing between Kenny and the nest boxes. I was near enough to see and hear what was going on, but Kenny did not know I was there. He was staring at Mr. Rooster with his hands on his hips and said in his toughest voice, "I eat chicken legs!" Needless to say I just about rolled on the ground laughing. Hope that at least brought a smile to your face. It is one of those things that I don't think I will ever forget and chicken really is one of Kenny's favorite foods.
CHICKENS, CHICKENS, AND MORE CHICKENS!!! Spring came around and chicken fever hit big time! It all started with a trip to Missouri to pick up Kenny (grandson) from his trip to dad's for spring break. I just happened to see a sign for a hatchery along the interstate. Of course, I couldn't pass up the chance to visit it so I called information to get a number, then called them for directions. As soon as I had Kenny, we headed straight there (he likes chickens as much as I do.......yea). He was excited and helped me pick out a dozen. We actually ended up with 14 because they give a free one with a purchase over 10 and I can't have 13 of something so I had to buy one extra to make it 14. Kenny decided on the way home that he would tell Pa Dale that it was all his idea because Pa Dale wouldn't get mad at him for buying chickens and he might get mad at me so it would be better if it was his idea. He's a great kid!!! A few days later, a friend of mine mentioned chickens and ordering some. We got to looking and talking to some other friends. It ended up with five of us putting in four different orders for baby chicks and ducks (yes, I was crazy enough to get the grandkids 3 baby ducks). So in a matter of a couple of weeks, I went from no chickens to buying over 60 baby chicks and 3 ducks. Guess who has to get really busy on fixing the chicken house.............you guessed it PA DALE.........he's such a good natured guy. He has just came to expect such things from me over the years. I don't even know for sure how many or what kind of chicks I ordered. I know we are going to have a good variety of standard size chickens and little bantams. I sure hope they help with the bugs around the place and in the garden this summer. Remember those other 3 friends that ordered with us, they started out telling Shelly and I that we had a problem and needed an intervention. Just goes to show how contagious chicken fever is............they didn't cure us, they just joined us!!!
